Main applications open on 1 October and close at the end of February each year, for the school year that begins in January. We also accept mid-year transfers from Term 2 onward when space allows in a grade — please call the office first.
Makweleng is a Quintile 1 No-Fee school. We do not charge tuition. We do ask families who can afford it to contribute R20 per term toward photocopying and the Heritage Day booklet — but this is voluntary, and no child is excluded for not paying. We are also a Section 21 school, which means we manage our own school-level allocations.
A hot meal is served every school day at 12:00 through the National School Nutrition Programme (NSNP). Menus rotate weekly — pap, samp, beans, rice, soya mince, plus vegetables from our school garden when in season. Please tell us at enrolment about any allergies.
We do not run a school bus, but most learners walk under 2 km from home. The provincial scholar transport scheme covers four routes from outlying farms — we can help your family check eligibility. A walking-buddy roster is run by our Grade 7 prefects each term.
We currently have 190 learners across Grade R to Grade 7, with 7 full-time educators (a learner-educator ratio of about 27:1, better than the provincial average of 32:1). Foundation Phase classes hold 22 to 26 learners. Intermediate and Senior Phase classes hold 24 to 30.
Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3) is taught in Setswana, with English introduced as a First Additional Language from Grade 1. From Grade 4, English Home Language becomes the medium of instruction; Setswana continues as a subject. We also support isiXhosa and Afrikaans home-language children individually.
Reading every evening — 15 minutes for Foundation Phase, 25 minutes for Intermediate, 30 to 40 minutes for Senior Phase. Plus written homework Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. We do not assign weekend homework, except for Grade 7 portfolio work in Term 4.
Aftercare runs until 17:30, Monday to Friday. It is supervised by Mr Zulu and two SGB volunteer parents. There is a small voluntary contribution of R50 per month per child. Children who walk home alone before 17:30 sign out with the duty teacher.
Bring the previous school's transfer card, the latest report, the learner's birth certificate (or ID), and the immunisation booklet. We will contact the previous school directly through SA-SAMS. Most transfers are confirmed within five working days — quicker if you bring the paperwork yourself.
Yes — Makweleng is registered as a Full Service School, which means we are equipped to support a range of barriers to learning. We work with the District-Based Support Team (DBST) for assessments. We are honest about what we can and cannot offer; for severe needs we will help the family find an LSEN school in the district.
